Before moving against the barracks, O’Malley visited the outposts and impressed on the men the importance of holding back enemy reinforcements. To Jim Gorman, who was with us on the road to Milestone, he said there did not seem to be much material available for road-blocks, except odd boulders, stones and banks of earth.

‘It’ll be all right, don’t you worry; they’ll throw the road over the ditch,’ said Gorman dryly, pointing to a pile of pick-axes, crow-bars and shovels by the roadside.
